Why I built TruffleHunt.

I work as a parts sourcer for a US eBay store. My job is finding underpriced ABS and brake modules the shop restores and resells as refurbished units. For a while I did it by hand — checking eBay maybe twice a day — and, honestly, I’m a bit lazy, so I kept missing the good listings that don’t last long.

I tried the free tiers of a few eBay alert tools, but they were scrapers: about three searches an hour, and they’d break or go quiet for stretches. After roughly six months of that I’d had enough, read up on eBay’s official API, and built myself a monitor that watches my searches through the API instead of scraping. It only became a product after it earned its place in my day-to-day sourcing.

  1. 01

    Source

The shop buys ABS units for roughly $70–100.

  2. 02

    Restore

Restoration happens at the shop, not in TruffleHunt.

  3. 03

    Resell

Restored units resell for around $300–800 — more when the part is rare.

Those resale figures are the shop’s revenue after restoration — not profit, and nothing TruffleHunt generates on its own. Fees, shipping, returns, labor, failed units, and inventory risk all vary from unit to unit.

The honest part

We don’t sell unlimited polling.
Nobody can.

eBay’s default Browse API limit is 5,000 calls per developer account per day. With the scheduler’s default two-page ceiling, one single-region 1-minute hunt is estimated at 1,440–2,880 calls/day: roughly 1–3 such hunts per account. At an hourly cadence, the estimate is 24–48 calls/day, or roughly 104–208 hunts per account.

  • BYO quota: your eBay account’s usage and reset timing stay visible.
  • Hunter Pro pooling: connect up to 10 accounts and let unpinned hunts use the active account with the most quota remaining.
  • Honest backoff: exhausted or rate-limited accounts stop sending requests and resume at eBay’s reset time; a hunt pinned to one account waits for that account.

FAQ

Four questions before you start.

Why do I need my own eBay API keys?

eBay gives each developer account its own Browse API quota, typically 5,000 calls per day. Connecting your keys means TruffleHunt can show the usage and reset timing for quota you control instead of hiding the monitoring budget behind a shared service. The setup guide walks through the eBay developer connection step by step.

How fast are alerts on each plan?

Forager can check every 30 minutes and sends email. Hunter can check every 5 minutes and adds Telegram or Discord. Hunter Pro can check every minute and supports the same three channels. Alerts follow a successful poll, so eBay ingestion, pagination, quota, and delivery time can add delay.

How is this different from eBay Saved Search?

eBay Saved Search is a marketplace notification. TruffleHunt is a persistent monitor with a plan-based cadence, new-listing and landed-cost price-drop tracking, visible API usage, and configurable alert routing. It does not scrape eBay or automate purchases.

What happens when an account approaches its API limit?

TruffleHunt shows used and remaining calls and warns as quota fills. At exhaustion or an eBay rate limit, requests stop and the hunt resumes at the account's reset time. Hunter Pro can automatically choose the active account with the most quota remaining for unpinned hunts; a hunt pinned to one account waits for that account.
